Chapter 21

Cyr cradled Mia in his arms as she cried tears of deep sorrow. He could feel Hunter’s concern at her reaction to this scene. He could also feel his confusion. Hunter did not understand that their little mate was an empath. She could feel the turmoil in the room as if it was a physical force that bore down on her. It had taken him to long to realize it himself, and she suffered for it.

Cyr didn’t miss the nervous looks of the occupants in the room as Hailey sidled up to Cyr’s side and petted Mia in soothing strokes. He eyed her curiously this was the first time in years his sister stood within such close proximity.

As he watched her chin tilted up with defiance, she glared around the room as if to dare them to try and force her away from her friend. “Everyone needs to calm down, you are hurting her.” He always admired his sister’s inner fire, but in this moment watching her comfort his sweet mate, he knew she was taking a stand once and for all. No one would keep her from her best friend’s side no matter the world’s feelings or her mates.

“You’re wrong Cyril.” Uncle Dmitri’s words penetrated the silence of the room. “This hellion has been your biggest supporter over the years. No matter what the others said, or the reports revealed, she refused to believe the worst of you.”

Shocked he stared at his sister with admiration. He always believed the entire family had written them off years ago. According to Mia, Hailey never mentioned her two older, twin brothers.

“I can see by the look in your eyes that I surprised you. Well since this room appears to need some cheering up I will reveal some even more fascinating truths.” Cyr noticed the look Uncle Dmitri gave Hailey, a question of sorts. Why would Dmitri seek approval from Hailey for anything? An Alpha didn’t ask permission, they spoke their minds and the world be damned. “Ah, poor Cyr, you have much to learn about women. I look forward to witnessing every idiotic thing you do.” Once his laughter subsided he continued. “Despite the surprised irritation she portrayed earlier, it was actually her idea to call you home. She’s contrived ways to set the three of you up for over a year now, but each time the attempt failed. Like me, she’s known for years Mia was meant to be a part of our family. It just took us both a while to figure out who she belonged to.”

Mia stilled in his arms at Dmitri’s confession. Now with dry, red rimmed eyes she stared with shocked disbelief between Dmitri and Hailey, indecision evident to all.

“Do not look at me like that sweet pea. I never hid the fact I actively searched for your mate. The council’s demands that you be presented to eligible wolves is the only reason you spent so much time at other pack compounds. If they allowed me my own way, you would have spent all your volunteer time here with us.
